“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. We should have a reverent fear of the Lord, the Creator of the Universe.  Yes, He is our heavenly Father.  Yes, He wants to have an intimate relationship with us.  However, it would be foolish of us to forget His position.  We are His creation. 

When you have an unfulfilled desire, do you complain and get angry with God? Have you grown weary of a trial and decided to give God a piece of your mind?  Imagine a tiny ant shaking his fist at YOU.  Magnify that concept and you have a picture of what you have been doing to God.  The crazy thing is, He still wants to love and interact with His angry “ant.”  Even from His high throne above, He will reach down through the heavens to fellowship with His adopted children.

A reverent fear means to have respect for God’s sovereignty. Sovereignty means supreme power and authority.  Can you now see how foolish it is to question the power of God? He knows all, sees all, does all, and IS all things. 

Acts 7:9 reminds us that Heaven is His throne and earth is His footstool.  God calls His children to come onto Him.  He loves us.  However, as any adult is frustrated by their own disrespectful and willful child…. So is God.  If we stubbornly stick to our attitude of presuming to know more than God and how best to remedy a situation, we will find ourselves in a lot of trouble.  Thankfully, our merciful and sovereign God has a great deal of patience.  From His mighty position on high, He willingly bends down to support and restore us.  Shouldn’t it be us bowing down to Him?

When was the last time you actually went down on your knees, prostrate before the Lord?  Meditate and consider His position now.  Will you honor Him with an act of humility and reverence?  Can you set aside any possible anger and question? Will you just trust in His power?  His love for you is ringing throughout the heavens.  This should make it easier for you to set aside your stubborn ways and worship His holiness.  He is in control and He can do whatever He wants.  He deserves your respect.  Are you wise?  Are you the fool?

In Hebrew, yirah (Jon 1:16, Ps 90:11), yare (above, Mal 3:16) and pachad (Job 3:25a, Ps 119:120) mean reverent fear, terror, or dread, normally translated simply fear. There are other words in Hebrew for mere respect, reverence, or honor, such as kabad (Ex 20:12). Fear And Sovereignty                                                                           

In Scripture and experience, the fear of God is closely linked to the revelation of His sovereignty. Job 23:13-16 (NIV) “But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? He does whatever he pleases. He carries out his decree against me, and many such plans he still has in store. That is why I am terrified before him; when I think of all this, I fear him.
