Our Spiritual Path

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119: 105 (NKJV)
“The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.” Isaiah 58:11 (NIV)
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” John 14:6 (NKJV)
We must travel along many different terrains and paths in this life. Each one is carefully created and laid out by our heavenly Father. Some routes will lead us into valleys and others will suddenly slope upwards, leading to high and sometimes dangerous places. No matter where your footpath takes you, it is important to remember that God will always be by your side.
Some paths are for but a short distance. When they end, we look around and find that a new one has been provided. These individualized paths we follow take us to places we cannot manage on our own. No, we must rely on the wisdom and strength of our God to trudge pass and beyond each one.
Furthermore, no path is without obstacles and God alone can move us past each one. The enemy is very good at inventing hindrances and he take joy in creating stumbling blocks. Thankfully, the angel army of God is mighty and no match for the evil one.
Foolishly, some wander off the path of life and discover they’ve become lost. Only through the grace of God can a lost soul find his/her way out of the darkness and back to the light. Through the faithfulness of the Holy Spirit a lamp of perpetual light shines, pointing the way back to truth and eternal life.
How rapidly we travel upon our path is not determined by God. No, we set our own pace. The measure of our surrender of self-will determines how quickly we progress through specific terrain. A yielded heart of obedience will do wonders for our gait. By listening, obeying, and trusting our Guide we conquer even the greatest depths and heights on our journey.
After my brain surgery, I stayed at my parent’s home for a month before moving into an assisted living facility to re-cooperate. Because my balance was off, I needed a walker to get around. I was terrified of falling and finding my brains on the floor. There was a long tile hallway I needed to walk down in order to get to the bathroom and the rest of the house. This was the path God gave me….. A tile hallway.
This hallway was my First Mountain, or Valley. It was a lesson straight from God, but I didn’t know it at the time. He was teaching me that if I trusted Him to guide me on this new path, moving forward by faith, He would meet my needs for that particular day. He was asking me to rely on Him completely with a total dependence that had nothing to do with my strength or will.
Since I serve a gentle, loving and compassionate Savior, He was careful to not overwhelm me with too many demands. His only requirement was to trust Him and remain faithful. The new path He had placed me on was well lit, but I could only see three feet in front.  You see, He knew my frame and understood that I would become overwhelmed if I saw all the obstacles before me. So, three feet was all He asked me to journey until I had gained back my strength.
Dear one, if you are in the midst of a sorrow or trial permit God to lead you through it. You may feel like you are in total darkness, but God is with you and He is eternal light. If you hold His had, He will guide you though your adversity. He knows the way. Eventually the light on your path will extend out a bit further and this will mean you are growing stronger… strong enough for God to reveal a bit more of His plan for you. In the meantime, lean on Him and take that first step forward.
“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11
“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4 (NKJV)
