On this eve before our country’s birthday – I’m led to think. I wish I could say it is happy thoughts and maybe my thoughts should be happy. I find myself however wondering – wondering how many more birthdays this country is even going to have left to it.
Now don’t get me wrong, there always has been and always will be some exceptional people in this United States of America – great people – ordinary people who do what needs to be done because it’s the right thing to do. These folks defend our country willing to pay the ultimate price if necessary – wear a police uniform and run into danger while everyone else runs away from it. These ordinary folks feed the homeless, go on mission trips right here in our own country like people that went to help those hit by hurricane Katrina. They respond to the fire call doing what it takes to rescue people and put the fire out – they ran into burning skyscrapers that fell on them never shirking the call of duty, the desire to help save lives. They taught your daughter and your son spending extra time with them when needed in school. These people brought you meals and helped you hold it together when your life was falling apart – they spoke truth into your life when you did not even know you needed it. All these did what was right – not for some shallow reward, but because it was the right thing to do and it mattered.
If you are over 35, maybe you remember a different America – an America that had more pride. An America that revolved around good wholesome values, an America that knew, just knew right from wrong and simply did what was right because it was right – because it was expected and was the social norm.
Now look at America today – there has been a 360 degree spin on what society sees as normal and right. Traditional American values such as pride in country with a can-do attitude, biblical values, working hard at whatever you do and being conscientious. Obeying your parents (well at least most of the time), respect for your elders, teachers, and for officials (including police), and instilling these values in our children. Earning what you get and not having it handed to you – all these things instilled a sense of satisfaction and pride in a person. Not so much anymore.
Pride in country is at an all-time low – values are changeable on a whim, being dictated by the latest social media postings. It used to be values were taught by our parents – now they are taught by Miley Cyrus and other pop culture figures who push the limits constantly – and the young people seemingly love it. The more risque and over the top the better. Reality TV has reached new lows with live sex in a box – nothing seems to be off-limits anymore. If it feels good do it seems to be the new American motto – with no regard for decency and moral guidelines. Morality and God are old school – to be thrown out with yesterday’s trash as if they have no value – no place in this country.
Obama leads the pack in this – if he cannot have his way like a spoiled child – he simply issues executive orders to ensure he gets what he wants, and Congress stands by and watches him do it. The courts, most notably of late the Supreme Court instead of interpreting the law – rewrites it at their whim to say whatever the nine think it should say.
Many in the Church have decided that an old book (some of us call it the Word of God – the Bible) does not so much hold value any longer. After all the Bible is just a collection of words written 1000’s of years ago by stodgy old men who could not possibly understand today’s culture and therefore all the silly rules contained therein no longer apply. God is being systematically kicked to the curb – even by the Church.
It seems that many people including those in the Church – do not realize that when God through His Word said, do not do that (the Ten Commandments, Jesus teachings etc.) – the transliteration of the text is – please don’t hurt yourself by doing these things. When God was more prevalent in U.S. society – society as a whole was better, the more God is removed from all things in the U.S. the deeper the people fall into depravity, evil, and chaos. It happened with ancient Israel and it is most definitely happening in the United States of America.
This may not be a popular message on the eve before July 4th, but it is what is on my heart – and if the people of the United States do not turn around and accept God back into society, reacquire the values our grandparents taught and modeled – we are in deep trouble as a nation. God’s judgment is already happening and is soon to get much worse. There is yet time to turn back to the One who can help us.
2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray , and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
My country is important to me, the people in it are even more important. I have to wonder given the route this country as a whole has chosen – how many more birthdays will the land of the free and the home of the brave have? Let us be in prayer for this country, for the blessing of God to be returned to us and the curse of sin and godlessness to be lifted from us.
God bless the USA – Happy Birthday America.
Listen to this video – the words of then president Ronald Reagan in 1989 – very prophetic and very true.
