All of us receive the witness of men. If you eat, you have faith in the cook, right? How do you know your wife is not going to serve you a little arsenic in that next meal? You don’t know for sure, but you have faith in her character and love for you that she won’t do that.
When you get into an automobile and somebody else is driving, you put your faith in the driver. How do you know this is not the day he is determined to drive off the bridge?
As you board an airplane, you put your faith in the pilot. I venture to say that most people don’t even know the name of the pilot on the plane. We don’t even look behind the door to see if we like his looks. We just get on.
What did John mean in this verse? We could not live without putting our trust in other people for certain things. And if we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater.
