HOLDING ON FOR DEAR LIFE

This is a well known phrase—holding on for dear life—but the following Scripture sheds entirely new light on these words—here is clarified meaning in black and white. This passage always has significance but especially so when our life capsizes and we desperately need something solid to grab.  The twist here is that God is doing the holding.

…”God Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support.  I will not, I will not, I will not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake you nor let you down, relax My hold on you–Assuredly not!!  So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently and boldly say,‘The Lord is my Helper, I will not be seized with alarm–I will not fear or dread or be terrified. What can man do to me?’”  Hebrews 13:5,6  (Amplified)

This is one of my favorite verses.  I have it hanging inside my cupboard door.  It thrills me every time I read it.  It is strong and powerful in its presentation and a remarkable assurance of God’s ever abiding presence and support with no lapses.  For me it always conjures up a vision of God holding our hand in His.

God will not fail us nor leave us with out His support. He will not absent Himself from us thus rendering us helpless.  Gosh He will not even RELAX His hold on us—not even a little teeny tiny bit.  Have you ever been holding on to something very tightly and all of a sudden your grip loosens and it falls, and depending on the  nature of the object, perhaps shattering to the ground?  Well we do not ever need to be concerned that will happen with our God.  He will never let go of our hand—He will never allow slippage due to sweaty palms.  No sudden distraction will avert His attention causing Him to loosen His grasp on us.

This passage is actually divided into two parts.  Verse 5 is God’s part—His promise to us.  But we then need to completely and totally trust that every word He said is true because there is a call to action that follows that promise.

We take comfort and are encouraged.  This begins the part where we exercise our free wills—this demands a response from us.  We have a choice here—either to repose in the green grass of comfort and encouragement or to flail around in the mud of discouragement.  Even though the silver lining has not yet appeared around that cloud, you still have a bright light of “choice”.  You can choose—will it be God’s promise or Satan’s lies?  Discouragement attaches blinders to “God” perception and holds our true inner sight hostage.  Release to God’s plan and way comes as a result of honest inner assessment.  So choose comfort and encouragement.

We confidently and boldly say that the Lord is our helper so we need never be alarmed or terrified or even have any fear.  So again it is incumbent upon us to determine how we will respond.  Anxiousness, stressfulness, and fear never make a change for the positive.  It just makes it harder to cope—harder to hear God and to sense the Holy Spirit’s direction.  It creates a God communication fog and blocks our                reception.   What an amazing outcome when we do trust the Lord as being our Helper with confidence and boldness.  I love this quote from Eleanor Roosevelt:  “Courage is more exhilarating than fear and in the long run it is easier.”

And then talk about a closing—what can anyone do to me (or as I add in my head when I read this, what can anyone keep me from)?  Is this reassuring or what?  Just think about this a second.  No person can interfere with God’s plan nor loosen God’s hold on us.  No human being can intercept what God has got going on or interrupt His guidance.  Nobody can keep us from accomplishment.  God is totally and completely in control.

Please take time to read our passage for today again and let every word penetrate into your very innermost being.  I challenge you—carry this in the deepest recesses of your heart.  Oh my friend your day will be brighter, your step energized, your mind at ease, and your spirit will soar.  God happenings will be yours.
