Wings of God

It is written that God made man in His image. There are many references in the Bible that depict God as having wings. This is a metaphorical depiction and symbol of His love and protection.

“So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them;
male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

Luke 13:34 speaks of Christ’s nurturing and protective love for His people. God has instilled within us a maternal and paternal love. A mother hen will collect her chicks and shield them under her wings when danger is near. Parents will also naturally collect their children and hold them close to their heart if danger approaches.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!”
Luke 13:34 (NKJV)

Nurture means to care for and encourage the growth or development of another person/thing. To mature and grow in a healthy manner we must feel safe. This requires trust. When we find our refuge under God’s wings, we can trust Him to protect us and provide for our needs. God understands that we require seasons of rest and comfort. Peace is necessary for rest. There are several accounts in the Bible where Jesus sets off to be alone.

Matthew 14 mentions of the death of John the Baptist. When Jesus heard the sad news, He withdrew to a solitary place, but the crowds followed Him on foot. Having compassion on them, He healed the sick and miraculously fed five thousand with just five loaves and two fish. Still, He required time to grieve and rest in the presence of His Father, so He left the crowd, with work still to be done. He sought the refuge of God’s healing wings.

“How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore, the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.” Psalm 36:7 (NKJV)

“I will abide in Your Tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah” Psalm 61:4 (NKJV)

“Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings.” Psalm 17:8 (NKJV)

A refuge is a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble. God speaks of our Christian walk as a race toward our eternal home. We are warned that we will suffer and encounter trials in this world but thankfully, God knows our frame. There is a comfort knowing God will protect, strengthen, and equip us to persevere. To find true rest we must abide in His peace.

“For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.”
Psalm 103:14 (NKJV)

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Under the wings of God, we will find healing. Matthew 9:20-22 tells of a woman who touched the robe of Christ hoping to find healing for her blood condition. Christ rewarded her faith and she was made well. The part of the garment she touched is called tassels or the fringes worn by Jews on four-cornered garments (Numbers 15:38-41)

The Greek text says she touched fringe or hem and the Hebrew equivalent is kanaf, which means corner or edge. Kanafim is also a Hebrew word for WINGS. So, in the Bible, the corners of garments have sometimes been compared with bird wings. We could conclude that this Jewish woman sought shelter in the shadow of God’s wings.

“And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. For she said to herself, ‘If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.’ But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her, He said, ‘Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.’ And the woman was made well from that hour.” Matthew 9:20-22 (NKJV)

“But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings; And you shall go out and grow fat like stall-fed calves.” Malachi 4:2 (NKJV)

I pray that the wings of God are your refuge and comfort. Take heart, dear one! Your God will protect and provide for your needs. May you run to the comfort of His wings and find rest.

“He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” Psalm 91:4 (NKJV)
