Be Still

When we are still and surrendered to God, we find peace, even if the earth is in an uproar and chaos surrounds us. A call to be still is an encouragement filled with wisdom. But what exactly does it mean?

Christians often interpret the command to be still as “to be quiet in God’s presence.” While quietness is certainly helpful, the phrase means to stop frantic activity, to let down, and to be still. For God’s people being still would involve looking to the Lord for their help.

Many of us are guilty of an over-zealous need to be self-sufficient. We might not be equipped for a project, but we give it a go because trusting someone else with the task would only lead to disappointment. The better option would be to look to God for help. This would require prayer and a time of stillness. Waiting on the Lord requires patience. This fruit of the Spirit is difficult for most of us to practice. But maybe, just maybe, God has set an obstacle before you to sanctify and refine you.

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.” Psalm 37:7

All of us have faced obstacles. Some have been gigantic and seemingly impossible to conquer. Has a health issue, financial losses, or the death of a loved one been your challenge? When we are too weary to carry on for one more day, the Lord fights for us. He clears a way and enables us to move forward in our battle. He is compassionate. He created us, so He knows our frame. He understands we are but dust and require His power to gain victory.

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14 (NIV)

Young children are non-stop energy. They are busy, busy, busy… to the point of exhaustion. Yet, they fight bedtime even though they want it. To be still is not their idea of fun. But just as parents see their child’s need to stop and reset for the next day, God sees our need to be still. When we chose to be still before the Lord we are setting our eyes on eternal things. It allows us to abide in Christ and meditate on God’s goodness.

Has your life been filled with frantic activity of late? If so, maybe God is asking you to stop and be still? Are there any plans you can put on the back burner? Can you slow down and take an early morning walk with God? If a battle is wearing you out, ask God to fight for you.

When you are still, free of anxiety, you will be a witness to others. They will be amazed by your peace and calm. This peace comes by trusting in an unseen God. This peace originates from Jesus, who rebuked the winds and calmed the Sea of Galilee.

“ Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.” Mark 4:29 (NKJV)

“Be still before the Lord, all mankind, because He has roused Himself from His holy dwelling.” Zechariah 2:13 (NIV)
