Thought For Today 11/14/2021: Are Humans Immortal?

The good news is that immortality as apposed to other things spoken of – is real

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:”  John 11:25

Some members of humanity have spent countless hours chasing down that effervescent dream – the Fountain of Youth, and some people still are.  Most notably those with boundless loads of cash and very little common sense.

Then there are those who scheme and dream of true immortality, the ability to live forever.  Some in today’s world believe they have this all figured out.

Mind uploading:

The conference took a surreal turn when Martine Rothblatt — a lawyer, author and entrepreneur, and CEO of biotech company United Therapeutics Corp. — took the stage. Even the title of Rothblatt’s talk was provocative: “The Purpose of Biotechnology is the End of Death.”

Rothblatt introduced the concept of “mindclones” — digital versions of humans that can live forever. She described how the mind clones are created from a “mindfile,” a sort of online repository of our personalities, which she argued humans already have (in the form of Facebook, for example). This mindfile would be run on “mindware,” a kind of software for consciousness. “The first company that develops mindware will have [as much success as] a thousand Googles,” Rothblatt said.

But would such a mindclone be alive? Rothblatt thinks so. She cited one definition of life as a self-replicating code that maintains itself against disorder. (1)

The first thing that comes to mind is: SCARY.  There is another tech startup that promises that in the future they can fully preserve and upload your mind to a computer.  Just one small stipulation first – you have to be dead.  Sounds like fun, when can I start?

Just imagine the call – “well we had a system failure, so your husband is dead, and we lost his mind.”  Oooops.

The Fountain of Youth, being young again, never dying, etc. is all a fallacy and a waste of time, not going to happen, EVER.

The good news (literally) is that immortality as apposed to other things spoken of – is real.  Humans ARE immortal, ALL of us.  There is no need to consume the blood of children (it is said people actually pay big bucks to do this), or receive infusions of plasma (a component of the blood) from young people, search for the well hidden Fountain of Youth (good luck with that), or upload your mind to a computer.

Why search for what you already possess?

Too many believe that when a person dies, it’s all over, there is nothing more than this life, and this life ends when a person dies.  That couldn’t be further from the truth.  What is death?  DUH!  You die, your dead, gone – right?  Not really – at the point of death, your body dies, you do NOT die.

The part that makes you – uniquely you, is your spirit, it is your spirit that (for lack of better words) animates you.  When your body dies, your spirit lives on.  Therein lies the possible problem, not death itself.  What do I mean?  Read on.

Since we have established that all people have an immortal spirit (like God), we need to establish what happens when the body dies.  That is simple – we (our spirit) either go to Hell (literally), or we go to Heaven.

4 I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.  Revelation 20:4-6

11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.  Revelation 20:11-15

What do the above verses tell us?  The people referenced above who reigned with Christ, and that were partakers in the first resurrection – these people are unaffected by the second resurrection ( But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished.) – the second death.

The second death (the first being the death of the body) is for those who refused Christ, those who do not believe and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.  These are thrown into the Lake of Fire – permanent separation from God.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

What else do these verses tell us?  Simply that human death is not the end.  Our souls, or more accurately our spirits live on.

The real question isn’t about immortality, living forever etc., the real question for those astute enough to realize it is this: “where am I going to spend eternity?”

Either you are going to repent of your wrongdoing (sin) and accept God’s free gift to you (eternal life with Him), or you are going to refuse Him, and your eternal life will be spent in Hell – actually in the Lake of Fire.

I think I would rather be forgiven and spend eternity with God, with a new and perfect body (mine is in fairly rough shape), and no more sadness or pain etc. – than be sentenced to an eternity of pain and misery in Hell.

What are you going to choose?

By the way – not making a choice IS making a choice, you are signing on for eternity in Hell.  Your next hour let alone tomorrow is NOT guaranteed, so make a wise choice.
