Are You Relying on Yourself?

By Adrian Rogers

For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For ‘whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’”  Romans 10:11-13

When Jesus spoke of some forsaking him, Simon Peter said “Lord, I’ll go with you to prison and to death” (Matthew 26:35, author’s paraphrase). And then Peter cursed and swore and denied that he even knew the Lord Jesus. Why?

  1. Those who think they can rely on themselves are hard hearted.

It is clearly mentioned in the Bible that we are saved by grace and not through our works so we cannot boast.

Now a days, people are becoming more and more self centered and think God can be taken for granted but they are ultimately fooling themselves.

God is not to be mocked or taken lightly which is clearly stated in the Bible.

One should strive to be Christ-like by being graceful just as God was by forgiving us of an otherwise unpardonable sin.

    • While I agree with your comment on this post, I cannot agree with the post I read on your site. I have removed the link to your site as I’d rather people don’t go there, here is why:

      Statements from your post:
      1. “Blindly accepting everything written in it can lead to a skewed worldview that is not in line with reality.”
      2. “Those who do not share our beliefs may view us as odd or even offensive, which can lead to strained social relationships.”

This is exactly what the problem is with most of today’s churches. The fear of “offending” people, hence the reason most pastors will not preach ALL of the Bible. It is more important to keep donations coming in, and to turn church into a social club while hearing nothing more than feel good messages. If people are offended by the Gospel and the fact that I believe it, that’s just how it’s going to be. Understand that no one should be going out of their way to offend others, but neither are we going to compromise our beliefs so as not to offend others.

      Another statement:

“Blindly believing in the Bible can also cause us to close ourselves off to the beliefs of other religions. While Christ himself was liberal…”

We as believers in Jesus Christ are SUPPOSED to believe the entirety of the Bible. Either Jesus is God and therefore perfect, meaning His Word is also perfect – or He is a liar. Our beliefs are indeed meant to be centered around the Bible, not what other religions believe – their beliefs are not ours, nor are they supposed to be. This does not mean as you implied that we disrespect these people, but we are not to be open to what they believe – yet another reason why today’s churches struggle.

Jesus Christ was a liberal????? Where did you ever get THAT idea from? Jesus said He was and is the ONLY way to the Father, doesn’t sound like liberal think to me. Liberals say that there are many ways to Heaven, not just Jesus, another valid reason not to invest in the ideas of other religions. Liberals are ok with homosexual pastors etc., God is not ok with this.

As far as Jesus coming back to free people from the “grip” of Satan, that is largely false. If one truly believes in Jesus, then one is free of Satan NOW. If you are not already free from Satan, Christ coming back isn’t going to free you either. This is the whole point of repenting of sin, of asking Jesus to be a part of our lives (more like us asking Him to be part of His life) – Satan no longer has sway over us, sin is no longer our master, Jesus is our Master.

Luke 21:36 "Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man."
