I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tare your hopes apart
And they turn your dream to shame
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he’ll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I’m living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream
I dreamed
Dear Readers,
Yesterday I went to see Les Miserable and was greatly moved by the actress who sang this beautiful song.
We all have dreams. They are big and wonderful and full of hope, especially when we are young. To have our dreams dashed upon the rocks is crushing and disabling. The Word puts it well when it says, “Hopes deferred makes the heart grow sick.”
There are different reasons for dreams to be crushed. Maybe we took a wrong turn and stepped out of God’s will for us by willfully sinning. Maybe we tried to take matters into our own hands instead of trusting God with the details of our lives. Things never work out when we try to manipulate or force the hand of God. Our impatience will often interfere with the good gifts God wants to hand us. Then again, maybe our hopes are not aligned with God’s desires for us. Often, He wants to give us something even better than that which we could possibly imagine. Hope is like faith. It requires us to be certain of that which is unseen and yet to come.
In the lyrics of this song, the cry from this broken woman ends in hopelessness.
She says that ‘There are some storms that cannot be weathered.’
I believe when we are in the very midst of the darkest of storms, our emotions and the lies of the enemy can cause us to believe this deception,
But it is indeed a lie.
We can do ALL THINGS through Him that gives us strength.
We can get past abuses and grief and devastations of the very worst kind
In the darkest of moments,
When you feel like you just can’t go another step in this world, all you need to do is look up and say three words…
“GOD, HELP ME!”
The minute this prayer is uttered, you are heard.
A loving hand will lift you up.
Strength will be given to endure another day.
Shame will be removed and hope restored, if you let it be restored.
Maybe you feel you are living a hell on earth right now.
I am so sorry if this is the case, truly.
But though you feel weak and worn-out,
You are stronger than you think because
You are a child of God and strong through His power
You can face anything so long as you endure this day
And the next day, and with His strength…… the next one too
Why you may ask. “Why should I strive so hard to live when all of my hopes and dreams have been washed away in this storm?” Because dear one……
There are people who need you. You are needed until the exact number of days He has written in His book of life have been completed. You have a service yet to complete. Keep your eyes on Him. He is the lighthouse in your storm and your storm will ease up, I promise.
PS
There IS a love that never dies
There IS a God who is forgiving
PROVERBS 13;12 (NIV) Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
