“Headship” and Equality Between Men and Women

“Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” – Ephesians 5:21
First Corinthians 11:3 says, “The head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.” Sometimes we get confused about what it means to be the “head” of the family. Anything with no head is dead and anything with two heads is abnormal. Just because the man is the head doesn’t mean that the wife is inferior. Both men and women bear the image of God. Both are heirs of the grace of life. Both are equal before God. But while male and female are equal, God has given them different roles. In the family, men have been given the role of leader.
How would our world function if no one was in charge? How would your body function without your head? Pray for leaders in your home, community, church, state, and nation.

  1. When a husband and wife walk side-by-side all their lives, there is no need for one to take charge or the other to be the leader; they agree together which way to go.

    • Hi Jamie, yes husband and wife are to walk together. Decisions can be made and should be made together.
Still, the Bible does state that the man is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the Church, this is Biblical and it’s not about who should lead – that choice was already made by God, not the husband and not the wife.
Consider this as well – any man that functions as the biblical head of the household – is also commanded to love his wife and give himself for her as Christ gave Himself for the church.
Remember in the same way – Christ was willingly submissive to the Father despite He Himself being God. Christ did not want to go to the cross, but He said, “your will be done”.
The man being the head is not at all about the husband getting to to tell the wife what to do all the time; that is a very flawed view, unfortunately many women view it this way and so to do the men. The man may be the head of the house, but the man is also to listen to his wife, she is NOT unequal to him and is in fact there to help him, advise him etc.
A woman desires to feel safe and loved (most anyway) above all things, and the husband is to provide that in what ways he is capable of doing. The husband above all other things (most anyway) wants to feel that his wife respects him, often more important than love, although men want to be loved as well.
No women that has a man that treats her as the Bible calls for despite her being willing to submit to him is going to complain. That wife will have a husband that is very devoted to her, loves her above all others (other than God), treats her very well, respects her, listens to her advice, and whose happiness and well being is important to him.
On the flip side of the coin the husband will have a devoted and loving wife who he knows respects him even when she does not always agree with him, a wife he can always confide in and gets good advice from, a true friend he can count on (and her him as well).
      Hope that helps
      Blessings
      Greg
