Understanding Kingdom Prayer, part IV

God Knows Your Every Need:

       ·  Matthew 6:8 NAS – “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”

Commentary: I hate to state the obvious, but if this verse alone tells us that God knows our needs, why do we pray in a manner that would suggest that He doesn’t? What I mean is that (again, this is geared toward the seasoned Christ-follower, not a new Christian) we tend to tell our issues and requests to God, yet it’s with an attitude of, possibly, God does not really know, or that He isn’t paying close enough attention to our lives. God knows all. He sees all. He hears all. There’s nothing you can tell Him that is a surprise to Him.

We Do Not Know How to Pray:

  • Romans 8:26 NAS – HELP IN WEAKNESS:  In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;
  • Luke 11:1-2 NAS – TEACH US TO PRAY: It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.” And He said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.

  • Acts 1:24-25 NAS – GOD’S DIRECTION : And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two You have chosen to occupy this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”

Commentary: We do not know what to pray outside of Holy Spirit guidance. We must, especially once we’ve walked with God a while, seek Holy Spirit to show us what it is we should pray instead of praying our wants and desires through emotionalism and the mind of mere man. All decisions for ministry, work, family, etc. should be after Holy Spirit consultation.
