Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

“And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.” – Mark 11:22

I ask some Christians, “How are you doing?” They say, “Okay—under the circumstances.” How did you ever get there?

Circumstances are like a mattress. You’re supposed to be on it, not under it. Under the circumstances, you suffocate; on them you rest pretty well.

The only way you can run the race is to take your eyes off things or people around you and look to Jesus. He’s the author of the race. He’s the goal to which you run. If you look to Jesus to supply your every need for the race, you’ll find faith growing in your heart and in your life. You see, it’s not great faith in God; it is faith in a great God.

  1. I love that hymn…one of my favorites. Great points you make here…thank you! I was actually just thinking about how people ask how you are, but don’t really want to know. It’s just a greeting…words people utter out of habit. I know some fellow Christians who think the answer should always be a simple, “blessed!” And yes…every day, no matter what circumstances may surround, we are still blessed. But sometimes if we’re not well, we should be able to say so, I think. We are supposed to bear each other’s burdens, encourage and pray for and with each other. Certainly we should keep our eyes on Jesus, but sometimes in the midst of particular trials, we do need someone to help us bear it…to hold us through the tears, etc. We shouldn’t be afraid to say when we’re hurting, and we shouldn’t be afraid of hurting people.
Not contradicting anything you’ve said here…just some additional thoughts that have been on my mind of late that seemed to go along with this post. 🙂

    • Yes I like Adrian Rogers 🙂
I agree with what you say – the one place that should be safe regardless of how you are and feel has in large part turned into something it was never intended to be. It seems to be more about put on your Sunday best and have a get together than about being a place of healing. As you said people often don’t want the real answer to ‘how are you’, it is merely a platitude.
