To forgive literally means to release a debt. When we sin, we sin against God, and heaven has sued us for damages. It is a debt that we cannot pay. Praise God that when His forgiveness comes, the debt is cancelled.
For example, let’s say you owe me $1,000 and you cannot pay me back. I forgive you for the debt. It costs me $1,000 to forgive that debt. There are no free pardons. Forgiveness costs. The forgivor forgives the forgivee and the forgivor pays the debt. There is no cheap forgivenesses.
When the Lord Jesus Christ forgave us, although our forgiveness was free, there was a price paid. For example, Ephesians 1:7 says, “In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” For God to forgive us, it cost the precious blood of Jesus.
One of God’s greatest gifts to us is forgiveness. Thank God for His grace that forgives us!
