I am a firm believer that taking time each day to find a joyful moment nourishes the soul. One such source is a furry friend that frequently keeps me company when I am sitting at my desk writing. As it is right in front of a large window looking out onto the patio I can see this frisky squirrel easily. Sometimes he comes to take a drink from the bird bath or to sample my potted plants hoping to find a delicacy. Or he plays tag with his buddy scampering up and down the tree trunks.
The other day while observing this adventuresome creature I was fascinated by how he literally went out on a limb. He kept creeping farther and farther out on a small branch until he had reached the very tip. The wind was blowing which along with his weight, the small circumference of the limb, and the fact that he was now on the very end made it shake ferociously. It seemed to not be nearly strong enough to support him. It swayed and rocked but he hung on tenaciously . There was something at the end of that branch making him brave enough to not be deterred—something he wanted badly enough to take a risk. My energetic friend was completely undaunted. He never looked back or down—just straight ahead at the reward he was intent on obtaining. He never lost sight of the goal and continued to pursue it with boldness and confidence. As I watched I saw him start nibbling on the desired prize. That tidbit was important enough for him to hang on for dear life until he achieved his objective. It was a strong enough desire to obliterate all fear or doubt.
I could not help but ponder: what if we emulated the behavior of the squirrel by truly trusting God enough that we approached Him in prayer with boldness and confidence; with risk taking—going out on the very edge—no borders—no boundaries faith? What if our belief system in His power to answer and provide was that strong and unshakeable— so much so that it would cause us to respond with absolutely zero fear or doubt enabling us to keep our eyes fixed on our goal?
Scripture invites us to approach God that very way. The following two passages, both from the Amplified translation, bear this out:
Ephesians 3:12 “In Whom, because of our faith in Him, we dare to have the boldness (courage and confidence) of free access—an unreserved approach to God with freedom and without fear.”
Hebrews 4:16 “Let is then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace—the throne of God’s unmerited favor that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in good time for every need—appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it.” With invitations like these let us not allow stifled requests and apprehension to limit the Heavenly Father.
And then dear reader let us look at what God has made available to us. Through the strength of Jesus Christ and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit we can hang on to that faith branch—hang on to that limb—no matter how strong the winds of Satan blow. It will remain sturdy enough to support us. We can experience results we could never imagine.
According to Ephesians 3:20, 21 the rewards will be exceedingly beyond our highest expectations. “Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen.” (AMP) Oh my friends listen to this magnificent passage with your eyes—open them wide to receive every word in its fullness. Allow access to your heart and soul with utter abandon—feel this —let it absorb into your core.
Last of all God promises the support we need while out on that limb. Hebrews 13: 5,6 says “…for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down relax My hold on you)! Assuredly not!]. So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently and boldly say, The Lord is my Helper; I will not be seized with alarm [I will not fear or dread or be terrified]. What can man do to me?” (AMPC)
Will you make this commitment with me? Through the empowerment of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit I will hang on to that faith branch—no matter how strong the winds of Satan blow.
