Our faith in God is like a plant, a perennial. Perennials come back every year. However, there are some years when perennials rise from the earth in a sickly state. They are present but not vibrant. Other years, their strength and vibrant colors take our breath away. Several factors contribute to their health including weather conditions, fertilization, and water intake.
Trusting in God’s faithfulness is not always easy. Storms will knock us sideways. But if we chose to believe in His character, we’ll rise from our adversity and take our place in His eternal plan.
Oswald Chambers wrote that faith is a deliberate confidence in the character of God. Many attributes make up God’s character. Taking a closer look at these traits will make deliberate confidence a reality in our lives.
*Consider how God’s love is eternal, sovereign, unchanging, and infinite. Because of His incredible love for us, He gave His son Jesus to be the sacrificial lamb that would blot out our sins and bring us back into eternal fellowship.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NIV)
“He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all–how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:32 (NIV)
It is a strange and beautiful eccentricity of the free God, that He has allowed His heart to be emotionally identified with men. Self-sufficient as He is, He wants our love and will not be satisfied till He gets it. Free as He is, He has let His heart be bound to us forever. God’s love is active, drawing us to Himself. His love is personal. He doesn’t love humanity in some vague sense, He loves humans. He loves you and me. And His love for us knows no beginning and no end. ~ A. W. Tozer
*God is immutable. He never changes. This means that God is dependable! Because an immutable God has promised us eternal life, we can trust that nothing, NOTHING shall separate us from His love.
“I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.”
Malachi 3:6 (NIV)
*God is Omnipotent. His power is limitless! Nothing is too hard for Him to accomplish. Sarah conceived a Son when she was 90 years old! Impossible is not in God’s vocabulary.
“Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” Genesis 18:14 (NIV)
*God is full of perfect wisdom. His understanding is unsearchable and far beyond our total comprehension. No plan we could make for our lives could be better than the plan He has already crafted and is carrying out for us. We might not understand His ways today, but we can trust that because God is infinitely wise, He truly is working all things out in the best possible way.
“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments, and His paths beyond tracing out!” Romans 11:33 (NIV)
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.” Isaiah 40:28 (NIV)
*God is faithful. The fact that God is infinitely, unchangingly faithful means that He never forgets anything, never fails to do anything He has set out to do, never changes His mind or takes back a promise. Therefore, we can trust in Romans 8:28 which states,
“We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
In all His relations with His people, God is faithful. He may be safely relied upon. No one ever yet really trusted Him in vain. We find this precious truth expressed almost everywhere in the Scriptures, for His people need to know that faithfulness is an essential part of the Divine character. This is the basis of our confidence in Him.
~A.W. Pink
*God is good. He is kind, tenderhearted, sympathetic, and friendly. His mercy flows from His goodness.
“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!”
Psalm 34:8 (NKJV)
There are many other attributes of God worth investigating. But the few I covered should help to build up your faith in an unseen God. Meditate on them. Let the goodness of God flood your heart. May His nature see you through today and the ones to follow.
