The Cup of Suffering

By Greg Laurie

But Jesus said to Peter, ‘Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?’”
—John 18:11

One day, the mother of James and John, the Sons of Thunder, approached Jesus with them and said, “In your Kingdom, please let my two sons sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left” (Matthew 20:21 NLT).

Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink?” (verse 22 NLT).

As He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was looking at the cup He had spoken of. And He wasn’t going to take just a sip of it. He was going to drink it all. He would taste death for everyone. And He had to drink it and die on the cross.
