The Law, Judgment, and Grace – Part Three

The Mosaic Law is not in effect any longer, period, the moral law however is in effect

By Greg Holt

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” Matthew 7:1-2

Verse two (and 3-5) give the context behind verse 1 – and it does NOT mean to not judge!!!  All people, will be judged, exactly by the standard that you judged others!  AGAIN, Jesus said to judge, with righteous judgment – why would Jesus in one place say, “Do not judge” (Matthew 7:1), then in another place say the EXACT opposite thing, “judge with righteous judgment” (John 7:24)???  Answer, He wouldn’t.

And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.” Hebrews 9:15

Jesus died, and PAID for the sins committed under the old covenant, that all may have forgiveness under the new covenant.  If the Mosaic Law was sufficient to the cause, then why did Jesus institute a new covenant?  That would not, and does not make any sense.

Jesus stated that He came to fulfill the law (Matthew 5:17), He also stated this:

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” Matthew 5:18

That verse is commonly interpreted (Wrongly) to meant that the Mosaic Law is still in effect, this is wrong.  As I have repeatedly stated, Paul plainly taught that the Law and grace do not mix, no exceptions.

Many insist, mistakenly, that the Mosaic Law is still in force, that those who do not follow Christ, or those that DO follow Christ, and judge others, are under, or are AGAIN under the “Law”.  Not possible.  I have proved that here, using Bible verses.

One last thought here: The Mosaic Law was commonly thought of as being divided into three parts, ceremonial law, judicial law, and moral law.  The first two parts of the Mosaic Law are abolished, no longer in effect, period.

The moral law however, IS still in effect, this is what Jesus referred to when He stated that not, “one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”  That being said, the Mosaic Law, still has no authority any longer!  The moral part of that law, IS still in effect, but under the Law of Love (Romans 13:8; James 2:8), and the Law of Christ (Galatians 6:2; 1 Corinthians 9:21).

Remember that I had stated that two of the three parts of Mosaic Law are finished, done?  Those two parts, ceremonial and judicial law, have served their purpose, they have been fulfilled, and as such, are no longer needed, Jesus tells us this in Matthew 5:18.

I have stated repeatedly that the “new law,” yet to be fulfilled, and contained within the new covenant, is even MORE strict than that of the Mosaic Law.  A couple examples:

Under Mosaic Law, a man could divorce his wife, and give her a bill a divorcement, done deal.  Jesus said, a man shall not divorce his wife for ANY reason, except sexual unfaithfulness.

Under Mosaic Law, revenge was permitted (NOT encouraged), an eye for an eye etc.  Jesus said to forgive all who trespass against you, to bless those who curse you and hurt you, to pray for them etc. – stricter than the Mosaic Law!

I have below, quoted the best explanation of this that I have thus far ever read:

“The laws of the Jews are commonly divided into moral, ceremonial, and judicial. The moral laws are such as grow out of the nature of things, and which cannot, therefore, be changed – such as the duty of loving God and his creatures. These cannot be abolished, as it can never be made right to hate God, or to hate our fellow-men. Of this kind are the ten commandments, and these our Saviour has neither abolished nor superseded. The ceremonial laws are such as are appointed to meet certain states of society, or to regulate the religious rites and ceremonies of a people. These can be changed when circumstances are changed, and yet the moral law be untouched. A general in an army may command his soldiers to appear sometimes in a red coat and sometimes in blue or in yellow. This would be a ceremonial law, and might be changed as he pleased. The duty of obeying him, and of being faithful to his country, could not be changed.

This is a moral law. A parent might permit his children to have 50 different dresses at different times, and love them equally in all. The dress is a mere matter of ceremony, and may be changed. The child, in all these garments, is bound to love and obey his father. This is a moral law, and cannot be changed. So the laws of the Jews. Those designed to regulate mere matters of ceremony and rites of worship might be changed. Those requiring love and obedience to God and love to people could not be changed, and Christ did not attempt it, Matthew 19:19; Matthew 22:37-39; Luke 10:27; Romans 13:9. A third species of law was the judicial, or those laws regulating courts of justice which are contained in the Old Testament. These were of the nature of the ceremonial law, and might also be changed at pleasure. The judicial law of the Hebrews was adapted to their own civil society. When the form of their polity was changed this was of course no longer binding. The ceremonial law was fulfilled by the coming of Christ: the shadow was lost in the substance, and ceased to be binding. The moral law was confirmed and unchanged.
