The time of the law and prophets is done. The Mosaic Law no longer applies, period.

I have recently been having a long conversation with a couple of people concerning the “Law”. It is my assertion then, that so many people today, are thoroughly confused on the “Law,” and what exactly this means, and what our relationship to the Law is, or more properly, the Mosaic Law, as that is what is most often referred to.
I posted an excerpt from Elliot’s Commentary… on the Bible –
“(21-22) Such was the condition of the world up to the coming of Christ. But now, in contrast with the previous state of things, a new system has appeared upon the scene. In this system law is entirely put on one side, though the system itself was anticipated in and is attested by those very writings in which the Law was embodied. Law is now superseded, the great end of the Law, the introduction of righteousness, being accomplished in another way, viz., through faith in Christ, by which a state of righteousness is superinduced upon all believers.”
**This is a small part of what I posted – for the sake of space here**
A commenter said to me: “I’ll have to review this in depth, but this is only Elliot’s interpretation and it doesn’t reflect what the NT teaches.”
Really? Benson agrees with Elliot, so does Barnes, Jamieson-Fausset-Brown, Gill, Geneva Study Bible, Meyer, Expositor’s Greek Testament, Bengel, Clarke, Darby etc. The comment was made that other men’s words carry little value – true to some extent. At the same time however, when so many other people disagree with your position, then one should at least be intellectually honest enough to consider that one might in fact be wrong.
Commenter: “You however seem convinced that you can do ANYTHING and not lose your salvation? That no matter what you do, you remain free? That isn’t what the Bible says, or what Jesus declared.”
I never said any such thing, and this commenter, along with so many others, refuses to see the truth of things, ignoring much of what I say, as well as the biblical proof I present, while continuing to stubbornly insist that we are held accountable to the Mosaic Law. I had one gentleman inform me that; as Jesus has made us free, we are now “free” to practice the Mosaic Law without condemnation! How is it possible to draw such an erroneous conclusion???
Supposedly, if we judge someone else for the breaking of a “law,” then we can lose our salvation by grace, thus placing ourselves back under the “law”.
The biggest problem here is that one cannot place themselves, regardless of actions, under something that no longer exists. “The law and the prophets were until John,” (Luke 16:16) in other words, the time of the law and prophets is done. The Mosaic Law no longer applies, period.
I know, I’m wrong, according to many. But to claim otherwise is a misinterpretation of Scripture. It’s like this next verse, that so many interpret to mean that Jesus is not God.
“And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.” Hebrews 5:9
Jesus’ human side was made perfect, His God “side” has always been perfect. Yet another verse taken out of context.
The Mosaic Law equals the old covenant, Jesus and grace equals the new covenant, as evidenced in this verse:
“For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” Galatians 5:14
Underlining mine.
Grace and the Mosaic Law do not mix; the Apostle Paul plainly teaches this.
“knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified (And Romans 3:20). Galatians 2:16
Underlining mine.
“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” Romans 10:4
“blotting out the handwriting of ordinances (The “Law”) that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; Colossians 2:14
“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” Romans 6:14
Underlining and bolding mine.
“Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.” Galatians 5:4
“But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.” Galatians 5:18
Underlining and bolding mine.
One commenter insists that if we judge another for breaking the “law,” we lose our salvation by grace, and are placed under the headship of the Mosaic Law. This effectively destroys the entire purpose of grace!!! Grace is for the times we DO mess up, incorrectly judging (For Christ Himself TOLD us to judge, but to do so righteously: John 7:24), a harsh word, lying, violence, killing, you name it, covered – IF one repents etc. Under this belief system, one screwup, and your salvation is gone, and you are subject to the Mosaic Law – you are dead.
