Thought for Today 06/18/2021: The Amazing God of Mercy

Those who choose not to accept God are not His children, plain and simple

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 2 Corinthians 2:3-4

By Greg Holt

(ICB)  The Father of mercies and all comfort, good thing for us.  Before we knew God, we were effectively His enemies (Colossians 1:21).  Yet He sent His only Son to pay what was ours to pay, for our sin.  The perfect man, Jesus, paid for all the sins of all men with a condition.

Some like to postulate that Jesus paid for the sins of the world, all men (and women) are the children of God etc.  That isn’t true, and it isn’t biblical.

The correct way to state that concept is: Jesus paid for the sins of all men, provided that we each one of us come to Him repenting of our sins and accept Christ as Lord and Savior.  God can’t give us what we refuse to accept!  If you have to be forced to accept something, it’s no longer a gift right?

Those who choose not to accept God are not His children, plain and simple.  God would like all people to be forgiven (1 Timothy 2:3-4, 2 Peter 3:9) and included in His family, but He won’t force people to accept Him.

The Universalists in fact teach that all will be saved at some point, and that couldn’t be further from the truth.  This foolish teaching would invalidate one of the topics Christ Himself taught on a fare amount, Hell.  If one does not accept the gift of salvation from God, then one will go to Hell, it’s that simple.

I myself still find it amazing that as we were (are) the ones who committed the wrongs, sins etc. against God – that God Himself came down from His place in Heaven and literally paid in His own blood and agony for OUR wrongs.

Think of it this way – lets say I (anyone) had a neighbor, and I tormented this neighbor for years, beat them up, stole from them, abused them, falsely accused them of crimes, doxed them on social media making others hate them for no reason.

Then one day I am on trial for a crime.  I am convicted of the crime.  My neighbor, who I was so rotten to, so abusive to etc., shows up at the sentencing hearing.  The neighbor says that he will pay the required price for my crimes and does so.

Now that of course would not happen, and doesn’t even begin to compare to what Jesus has done for us, but it gets the idea across well I think.  The neighbor is God, and all of us are of course the rotten to the core dirtbag who so deeply abused the neighbor.

After God saves us, He continues to take care of us and even provides us comfort for all of our woes.

Give thanks to God today for all that He has done for you.

  1. I hear it all the time, “we are ALL God’s children.” He created us but that’s no different than me creating a painting. It doesn’t make the painting my child. Good post Greg. I hope it opens some eyes.
