Brother Greg, I really am blown away about coming across this post less than 48 hours after I left a church committee meeting disgusted with the excuses people were giving for not finding safe ways to transport homeless to shelters! Or even safe ways to converse with them to find out their needs and a little of their history and share a little of the love of Christ! Yes, seeking the “personal relationship with your Lord” can seem selfish to outsiders, and even to service-minded church members. Balance is the key. Using the personal relationship to fuel the service is the answer, it seems to me.
